How are you involved with Utah nightlife?
Im one of the owners of Ki Events (the other owner is my wife), we do some of the big electronic events in the state. And in 2010 well have more than electronic [performances].
What are the nights you promote?
Currently we are promoting and getting ready for our next show which is Mardi Gras on Feb. 27 featuring global deejays at The Rail Events Center.
How long have you been working with Ki Events?
I started Ki events Feb. 22, 2007, so about three years. I started it with Ro Morales and Cava Vargas.
What are your duties when it comes to Ki Events?
You have to be in your e-mail constantly, learning music, booking hot acts, make sure all you advertising is done, stage production, hotels, flights, make sure all of our 45 promoters are doing their job right and making sure street team are hitting the right spots I could probably go on for a while.
Do you feel like promoting methods have changed in recent years? If so, how has it changed?
Yes it has a lot. For these kind of events, we would only do fliers and that is enough to get the word out, but now we have to do every way you can think of so we can reach every person in the state.
What do you feel you have added to each venue you promote?
A good reputation. We are recognized for the quality of events that we do, we worry about every little detail and well make sure to keep it that way.
Whats your recipe for a good party?
Thats a secret. Our smallest party this past year was 1,500 and our biggest was 5,000. I cant tell you the secret, sorry, but one thing I can say is that its a lot of dedication. Its a 24/7 job for sure. On the day of the shows, we work from 7 a.m. to 6 a.m. the next day. I get beat up pretty bad, but I love it because everyone that comes away with a smile! It makes it all worth it.
Whats the coolest thing that happened to you while youve been a promoter?
Well lets see, hook-ups every where me and my team go, for example New York in LA, I took the whole crew and had a blast with Markus Schulz, David Guetta, Kaskade, Marcus Schossow. It was a great event about 55,000 people.
Do you ever feel like people treat you differently because you are a promoter? If so, how do they treat you differently?
Yes they do, they are more formal with me, but at the end of the day I make sure to show them Im just like everyone else and they should treat me like a friend and also that Im not just the only one behind the events. Andrea (my wife) is 100 percent on it and our team is awesome, the beat of time, the rail, our friends. Its like one big family business.
What kind of experience do you think people are looking for in this economy?
People want to still have a good time and go out. When people come to our events, they all do have a great time and forget about every single problem including the economy. For that reason, weve lowered our prices to shows. They used to be $30 to $35. but this year we are doing $20 for most of our shows.
